What is the Online First Aid Training Course?

The Online First Aid Training Course provides learners with essential first aid knowledge and awareness to help them respond effectively to emergency situations. Designed as a flexible online training course, it introduces key first aid skills, emergency first aid principles, and basic life-saving techniques that can be applied at work or in everyday situations.

This course is suitable for employees, supervisors, and individuals who want to build confidence in dealing with incidents such as cardiac arrest, heart attacks, unconscious casualties, and other incidents requiring first aid. It also supports workplace safety by improving understanding of first aid arrangements and responsibilities. Delivered through an easy-to-use e-learning platform, learners can complete the course at their own pace.

First aid awareness training helps individuals respond calmly and effectively when incidents occur. In workplaces, it supports compliance with first aid arrangements and helps employees understand how to act until emergency services arrive — helping to build safer workplaces and communities.

Course content

Twelve focused modules take you from the fundamentals of first aid through to CPR, defibrillator awareness and a final assessment. You can work through them at your own pace and revisit any topic as often as you need.

1. Introduction to First Aid

This opening module explains what first aid is, the role of a first aider and the difference between awareness training and a regulated qualification. You'll learn the key aims of first aid, preserving life, preventing a casualty's condition from worsening and promoting recovery, which set the foundation for everything that follows in the course.

2. First Aid Responsibilities and Arrangements

Here you'll explore the legal and practical responsibilities surrounding first aid in the UK workplace, including employers' duties under health and safety law. The module covers needs assessments, first aid kits, appointed persons and how suitable arrangements help keep colleagues safe and ensure an organisation can respond effectively when something goes wrong.

3. Emergency Situations and Scene Safety

Before helping anyone, you must make sure it is safe to do so. This module shows you how to assess a scene for hazards, protect yourself and others from harm and avoid becoming a second casualty. You'll also learn how to stay calm, take control and prioritise your actions in a stressful emergency.

4. Primary Survey (DRABC)

The primary survey is the systematic check used to find and treat life-threatening conditions first. You'll work through the DRABC sequence, Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Circulation, and learn how each step helps you quickly identify what needs your immediate attention when assessing an unwell or injured casualty.

5. Secondary Survey

Once any immediate dangers have been dealt with, the secondary survey helps you build a fuller picture of the casualty's condition. This module covers carrying out a head-to-toe examination, gathering a relevant history and identifying signs and symptoms so you can pass clear, useful information to the emergency services when they arrive.

6. Unconscious Casualties

An unconscious casualty needs careful, prompt attention to keep their airway open. This module explains how to recognise unconsciousness, check breathing and place a breathing casualty into the recovery position. You'll understand why these steps matter and how they help protect someone who cannot look after themselves while you wait for help.

7. Cardiac Arrest and CPR Awareness

This module raises your awareness of cardiac arrest and the role of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in keeping blood and oxygen moving to vital organs. You'll learn how to recognise the signs of cardiac arrest and the principles of chest compressions and rescue breaths, building the confidence to act quickly in a potentially life-threatening situation.

8. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Automated external defibrillators can dramatically improve someone's chances of survival during cardiac arrest. This module introduces how an AED works, where you might find one and how the device guides a user through the process. You'll gain the awareness needed to support the use of an AED alongside CPR while emergency help is on its way.

9. Common Workplace Incidents

This module looks at the everyday injuries and conditions a first aider may encounter, such as burns, cuts and bleeding, choking, fractures and shock. You'll learn the basic awareness-level responses to these common workplace incidents, helping you give appropriate initial care and know when further medical attention is required.

10. Paediatric First Aid Awareness

Children and infants have different needs from adults, so first aid techniques must be adapted accordingly. This module raises awareness of how to approach common emergencies involving younger casualties, highlighting key differences in technique and the importance of acting calmly and appropriately when caring for a child or baby in distress.

11. When to Call Emergency Services

Knowing when and how to summon help is a vital part of first aid. This module explains how to recognise situations that require the emergency services, what information to give the operator and how to communicate clearly under pressure. Calling for help promptly ensures professional support reaches the casualty as quickly as possible.

12. Final Assessment

The course concludes with a multiple-choice final assessment that checks your understanding of the key topics covered. It gives you the chance to consolidate your learning and demonstrate your first aid awareness. Once you pass, you'll be able to download your certificate as evidence of completing the training.

Assessment & certificate

To earn your certificate, you'll complete a multiple-choice final assessment with a pass mark of 75%. Retakes are included free of charge, so if you're not successful first time you can take the assessment again as many times as you need until you pass.

As soon as you pass, you'll receive an instant digital Online First Aid Training Certificate that you can download and present to your employer as evidence of first aid awareness training. The certificate is CPD certified and RoSPA approved. There's no fixed expiry date, but we recommend refreshing your training every two to three years to keep your knowledge current.
