Why mental health courses matter

Mental health is part of overall health, and it is treated as such in UK law. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, every employer has a general duty of care to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees so far as is reasonably practicable — and the courts and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognise that this duty extends to psychological health, not just physical safety. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 reinforce this by requiring employers to assess the risks to which their staff are exposed, including the risk of work-related stress.

Responsibility is shared. Employers are responsible for putting reasonable measures in place — assessing risks, providing information and training, and creating an environment where people can raise concerns. Managers and supervisors are responsible for spotting changes, having supportive conversations and signposting to help. Individual employees also have a role in looking after their own wellbeing and in supporting one another. Awareness training gives everyone a shared understanding and a common language so these responsibilities can be met in practice.

The Equality Act 2010 adds a further dimension: where a mental health condition meets the definition of a disability, employees are protected from discrimination and employers may need to make reasonable adjustments. Building awareness across a team helps an organisation respond fairly and consistently, reduce stigma, and support people to stay well and stay at work.

Frequently asked

Mental health training: your questions answered

Common questions about accreditation, the law, cost and certificates.

Are your mental health courses accredited? +

Yes. Our mental health training is CPD certified and RoSPA approved, so certificates are recognised by UK employers and accrediting bodies. The moment you pass the end-of-course assessment you can download a printable PDF certificate.

Is mental health awareness training a legal requirement? +

There is no single law that names a specific mental health course as mandatory. However, under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers have a duty of care to protect employees' health — which includes mental health — and to assess and control work-related stress. Mental health awareness training is a practical, widely recommended way to help meet that duty.

How long does the course take, and what does it cost? +

The Mental Health Awareness Course takes around 60 minutes and can be paused and resumed at any time. It costs £14 per learner, with automatic bulk discounts of 10–40% when you buy 10 or more seats across your order.

Will I receive a certificate? +

Yes. As soon as you pass the short end-of-course assessment you can download a printable, CPD-certified PDF certificate from your dashboard. There is no waiting and no posting required for digital certificates.

Who is mental health awareness training for? +

It is suitable for employees, managers and supervisors, HR and people teams, carers and support workers, and any individual who wants to better understand mental wellbeing. No prior knowledge is needed.

Can I buy mental health training for my whole team? +

Yes. Buy any mix of courses in one order and assign seats to staff by email from a management dashboard, where you can track progress and download every certificate. Discounts apply across your whole order: 10% off 10+, 20% off 50+, 30% off 100+ and 40% off 500+.
