What is the Mental Health Awareness Course?

The Mental Health Awareness Online Course is designed to improve understanding of mental health, mental wellbeing, and common mental health issues that affect people in everyday life and the workplace. Suitable for employees, managers, carers, and individuals with an interest in mental wellbeing, this mental health awareness course explores a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, stress, eating disorders, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. It also highlights the connection between mental health and physical health, and the importance of early support.

Delivered as fully online mental health training, learners can complete the course at their own pace. Upon successful completion, learners receive a Mental Health Awareness Training Certificate, suitable for personal development, workplace awareness, and training records.

Mental health awareness training helps individuals understand mental health problems, challenge stigma, and create supportive environments at work and in society. This course is an important first step towards improving mental health awareness and wellbeing.

This course raises awareness and encourages positive conversations about mental health. It is not a clinical qualification — for a designated workplace responder you'll need the Level 3 Workplace Mental Health First Aid Certificate.

Course content

Eleven structured modules taking you from the foundations of mental health awareness through to recognising the signs, supporting others and knowing where to find help — finishing with a final assessment.

1. Introduction to Mental Health Awareness

This opening module sets the scene, explaining what mental health awareness means and why it matters to everyone, both at work and in everyday life. You will learn how the course is structured and what you can expect to take away from it, building a clear foundation for the topics that follow.

2. Understanding Mental Health and Wellbeing

Here you will explore what good mental health and wellbeing actually look like, and how they differ from mental ill health. The module covers the factors that influence our wellbeing and introduces the idea of a mental health continuum, helping you understand that everyone has mental health that can change over time.

3. Common Mental Health Issues and Conditions

This module provides an overview of the mental health conditions you are most likely to encounter, helping you recognise them with greater confidence. Understanding the nature of these conditions reduces misunderstanding and equips you to respond more sensitively to colleagues, friends or family members who may be struggling.

4. Anxiety, Depression, and Stress

Focusing on three of the most widespread mental health concerns, this module looks at the signs, symptoms and common triggers of anxiety, depression and stress. You will learn how these conditions can affect day-to-day functioning and gain practical insight into how they can be managed and supported.

5. Self-Harm, Suicidal Thoughts, and Eating Disorders

This module addresses more serious and sensitive areas, including self-harm, suicidal thoughts and eating disorders. It explains the warning signs to look out for and how to approach these difficult conversations with compassion, while highlighting the importance of seeking professional help promptly.

6. Adverse Childhood Experiences

Here you will examine how adverse childhood experiences can shape mental health and wellbeing well into adulthood. Understanding this link helps you appreciate why some individuals respond to situations as they do, and underlines the value of early, supportive intervention.

7. Mental Health in the Workplace

This module considers mental health in a work context, looking at how the working environment can both affect and support employee wellbeing. You will learn about creating a supportive culture, reducing workplace pressures and the role everyone can play in promoting positive mental health at work.

8. Stigma, Society, and Mental Health

Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to people seeking help. This module explores how society's attitudes towards mental health have developed, the impact stigma can have on individuals, and the part we can all play in challenging misconceptions and fostering a more open, understanding environment.

9. Supporting Others and Encouraging Help

This practical module focuses on how to support someone who may be experiencing poor mental health. You will learn how to start a supportive conversation, listen without judgement and encourage the person to access appropriate help, building your confidence to make a real difference.

10. Mental Health Services and Support Options

Knowing where to turn is essential. This module outlines the range of mental health services and support options available, from self-help resources through to professional and clinical care. It helps you signpost others, and yourself, to the most appropriate sources of help when they are needed.

11. Final Assessment

The course concludes with a final assessment that checks your understanding of the key topics covered throughout. Successfully completing this assessment confirms that you have absorbed the core principles of mental health awareness and are ready to apply them in real-life situations.
